Reupholstering Vintage Steelcase Bench Pt 3

| |

The project started with this. I gave you a sneak peek of the fabric here. Finally the fabric has finally arrived! Quite exciting really. And now for the big reveal!

Yup Missoni "Kew" fabric! It was quite the task trying to secure this. After getting an initial quote from the upholsterer, they also mentioned I'd need at least 2.5 yards to make this bench work. If I learned anything from the other project I'm working on ( will write about that later), the more fabric the better. (READ: at LEAST 3 yards).

I first started exploring vendors in SF to order, starting with the Urban Merchantile in the design center who quoted me $490 per yard. Then several calls to Missoni in LA which required a minimum $1500 order. Not convinced, I looked while I was in London visiting the Liberty of London store and examined their fabric selection. Briefly distracted by a beautiful velvet Kenzo "Ceorec" fabric, I stayed the course. After all that, I ended up special ordering the 3 metres of fabric from Milan through Amara in the UK. The fabric arrived one month after my initial order. And it did not disappoint. It is amazing. This project has been quite an undertaking and collaboration with my upholsterer.

While I did buy the chevron pattern for the top of the bench, I made the decision to also switch up the side pattern with an accompanying 1.5 metres of the horizontal "Claremont" fabric. (Seen below)

So with 4.5 metres of fabric, I headed to my guy and dropped off the fabric. Originally I had planned on using some of the missoni fabric purchased as the piping, but after being convinced of using a plain black fabric for piping, I'm convinced I made the right choice. (Plus, using expensive fabric as piping is a no-no)

If all goes well, what you see here is how the fabric on the bench should turn out. I'm ready for this amazing project to be completed and unveiled!

Things purchased for this project
Missoni Kew fabric: 3 metres @$352/metre at Amara
Missoni Claremont fabric: 1.5 metres @$190/metre also through Amara by special order
